Sanmon

@The main gate is called the mountain gate because Buddhist temples are regarded as mountains (we "ascend" to the temple). Rebuilt in 1749, this is the oldest of Eiheiji's buildings.

@In the upper level is the Rakan Hall containing images showing Shakyamuni Buddha delivering the sermon recorded in the Kegon (avatamsaka) Sutra to the 500 Rakan (Buddha's disciples). The Shitenno, the four heavenly kings who guard the dharma, stand at the four corners of the ground level.
